Hi folks,
I just wanted to give you a resource for information regarding immigration, refugee status, and asylum-seeker status in the UK (per our conversation on Tuesday), especially for those of you who are working with Dirty Pretty Things for your close reading. This website contains lots of information about the governmental regulations affecting asylum seekers (like Senay) before they are awarded refugee status; it can perhaps help to contextualize the film's portrayal of the particular precariousness of her position. Also, as a somewhat suggestive side note, UK immigration laws regarding asylum seekers and employment changed in 2002, the same year this film was released...
Looking forward to conversing with you all tomorrow over your close readings.
Best,
Dr. Renzi
